IS THE MEDICAL CODING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM RIGHT FOR ME?
This program is recommended for those individuals that prefer working on tasks and do not want direct hands-on patient care. This is a good field for you if you like administrative work, are professional, are reliable, and can follow instructions easily. Recommended high school courses include mathematics, health, biology, keyboarding, bookkeeping, computers, and office skills. Previous bookkeeping or administrative experience is also helpful.
Medical coders assign a code to each diagnosis and procedure by using classification systems software. The classification system determines the amount for which healthcare providers will be reimbursed if the patient is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or other insurance programs using the system. Coders may use several coding systems, such as those required for ambulatory settings, physician offices, or long-term care. Medical billers and coders are required to respect patients' personal and confidential medical information.
